Description
ABOUT TAXWIRE Taxwire is building the last global indirect-tax platform finance teams will ever need. We help companies understand their tax exposure, calculate and collect the right amount, automate registrations and filings, and stay compliant as they grow across jurisdictions. Indirect tax is high-stakes, fragmented, and unforgiving. Rules change constantly, vary by product and location, and create real financial risk when companies get them wrong. We hire people with high ownership, strong judgment, and low ego. Everyone at Taxwire is expected to understand the customer, solve messy problems end to end, and build systems that scale. We move quickly because our customers depend on us to get it right. We’ve raised approximately $25 million, serve hundreds of SMB and mid-market companies, and continue to win customers away from legacy providers. We’re proud to have had zero churn to date. If you want to solve a massive, permanent problem alongside experienced tax experts and product builders, Taxwire is the place to do it.   ABOUT THE ROLE This is a technical role, but you do not need to be a software engineer. Indirect-tax law is fragmented across thousands of jurisdictions, buried in statutes, regulations, rulings, forms, directives, and guidance that change constantly. Turning that information into a product customers can trust requires more than reading the law. It requires structure, judgment, and an obsession with getting the details right. We’re hiring an Indirect Tax Researcher to expand the intelligence layer that powers Taxwire. You’ll research complex US sales and use tax and global VAT questions, determine how the law applies to real products and transactions, and translate your conclusions into structured rules our product and tax engine can use. This is not a traditional tax research role where the final output is a memo. Your work needs to become logic, data, test cases, and clear product behavior. You’ll work closely with Tax, Product, and Engineering to make sure the nuance survives that translation. You’ll also use AI aggressively. You’ll build research workflows that can monitor legal changes, find relevant authority, extract structured information, compare jurisdictions, and identify gaps. AI will help you move faster, but you’ll remain accountable for every conclusion that reaches our product or customers.   WHAT YOU’LL DO   RESEARCH INDIRECT-TAX LAW - Research sales and use tax laws across US jurisdictions and VAT laws across global markets. - Analyze taxability, sourcing, place of supply, nexus, registration thresholds, exemptions, rates, filing requirements, and other indirect-tax questions. - Interpret statutes, regulations, administrative guidance, rulings, forms, EU directives, and other primary authority. - Monitor US and international legislative and regulatory changes that could affect Taxwire’s customers or product.   TURN RESEARCH INTO PRODUCT LOGIC - Translate sales tax and VAT law into structured rules, decision trees, product categories, and testable requirements. - Document each conclusion with clear reasoning, source authority, effective dates, and known limitations. - Work with Product and Engineering to turn complex tax rules into reliable product behavior. - Build test cases covering common scenarios, edge cases, exceptions, and conflicting authority.   BUILD AI-NATIVE RESEARCH WORKFLOWS - Use AI agents and research tools to find authority, compare jurisdictions, extract changes, and draft structured analysis. - Design workflows that make research faster without sacrificing accuracy or traceability. - Evaluate AI-generated conclusions, identify unsupported claims, and improve the systems that produced them. - Help automate recurring research, change monitoring, classification, and quality-assurance work.   OWN ACCURACY AND QUALITY - Review sales tax and VAT content, classifications, and product logic before
