Description
Commonwealth Fusion Systems is developing commercially viable fusion power plants and seeks a Senior Control Software Engineer to design, implement, and verify software and controls for advanced R&D equipment and complex machinery. As a hands-on technical contributor, you will develop mission-critical real-time control systems, collect functional requirements, and integrate software across testbeds and production tools.
What You'll Do
• Design and implement control software for advanced R&D equipment and complex machinery across multiple platforms including PLCs and real-time Linux systems
• Develop operator interfaces and workflows for industrial control systems
• Collect functional requirements from customers and produce software solutions to meet those requirements
• Integrate software into software testbeds, hardware testbeds, and production tools in collaboration with other engineers
• Contribute to broader software ecosystem improvements including tooling and processes used across the company
What You Need
• Bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering field (computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, industrial engineering, or equivalent)
• Several years of experience with industrial control systems and/or embedded control systems
• Several years of experience producing production-quality control software
• Proficiency with Python
• Proficiency with at least one real-time control language (C++, SCL/ST, Rust, or equivalent)
• Working knowledge of modern software development lifecycle practices (CI/CD, git version control, unit testing, integration testing)
• Familiarity with Linux
• Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs and perform activities such as stooping, climbing, typing, standing, and sitting for extended periods
• Dedication to safety and ability to work around industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead, high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics
Nice to Have
• Familiarity with industrial control platforms (e.g., Beckhoff TwinCat)
• Experience with industrial protocols (e.g., EtherCat, Profinet, Modbus)
• Familiarity with general networking (IP/UDP)
• Willingness to occasionally travel or work required nights, weekends, or on-call
